GENTILESCHI, Artemisia
Italian Baroque Era Painter, 1593-1652
Tuscan painter, daughter and pupil of Orazio Gentileschi, b. Rome. She studied under Agostino Tassi, her father's collaborator, who was convicted of raping the teen-age Artemisia in 1612. Over the years, she has been portrayed as a strumpet, a feminist victim or heroine, and an independent woman of her era and her life has been fictionalized in several novels and plays. In purely artistic terms, she achieved renown for her spirited execution and admirable use of chiaroscuro in the style of Caravaggio, and during her life she achieved both success and fame. In 1616 she became the first woman admitted to the Academy of Design in Florence. About 1638 she visited England, where she was in great demand as a portraitist. Among her works are Judith and Holofernes (Uffizi); Related Paintings of GENTILESCHI, Artemisia :. | Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting fdg | Judith Beheading Holofernes dg | Portrait of a Condottiero dg | Mary Magdalen df | Birth of St John the Baptist dfg | Related Artists: Jacob MaentelAmerican physician and watercolor portraits painter,1763-1863 Mauritz F H HaasDutch (Resident in US)

Juan de BorgonaSpanish Painter,
ca.1470-1534
was a High Renaissance painter who was born in the Duchy of Burgundy, probably just before it ceased to exist as an independent state, and was active in Spain from about 1495 to 1534. His earliest documented work was painted in 1495 for the cloister of the Cathedral of Toledo. Borgoña??s compositions are well balanced with finely drawn figures in elegant, tranquil poses. They are set either against open spaces leading on to craggy landscapes or against gold embroidered drapery. There were a number of foreign painters active in Spain in this period, including Juan de Flandes. Borgona??s students include Pedro de Cisneros the Elder (died 1546), Antonio de Comontes (ca. 1500-1519),
